Introductory FAQ

Frequently asked questions about getting started with Fillet Origins

What does Fillet Origins do for me?

Fillet Origins helps you to manage data about country of origin, throughout your various production inputs, processes and outputs.

The current release of Fillet Origins is focused on entering country of origin data for ingredients. Ingredients are your base materials which, in upcoming releases, can be used to create composites such as items for sale (menu items) and a library of intermediary materials (recipes).

Country of origin is also a resource about sourcing, traceability, and consumer knowledge. This is especially meaningful if your items for sale are locally sourced, from designated production areas or places of provenance, or simply produced domestically. These resources enable you to highlight your production and manufacturing methods, as well as the value of your products. Fillet Origins will be an invaluable tool on your production roadmap: applications, reviews, inspections, compliance reviews, and ultimately, certification.

Why should I get started now? How do I start?

You should start inputting ingredients’ country of origin data now. If you have a large number of ingredients, you can begin by entering country of origin information for your most important ingredients, and work downwards based on decreasing priority or frequency of use. By doing so, you will be at an advantage when upcoming releases of Fillet Origins become available: you will be able to immediately create, view, and manage composites in your existing Fillet data.

If you have an active Fillet subscription plan, you can access Fillet Origins in the Fillet web app: simply go to the Ingredients tab, choose an ingredient and open the “Origins” section.

When will Fillet Origins be useful to me? How will country of origin data be used elsewhere in the app?

This depends on your specific workflow and needs.

This current release of Fillet Origins is useful for recording, tracking, and viewing the country of origin for each of your ingredients. This is useful as reference information, for records-keeping, and tracking changes.

In upcoming releases, you can create composites such as intermediary materials (recipes) and items for sale (menu items). Fillet Origins will use your ingredients’ country of origin data to compute the country of origin for each component in the composite. As well, you will be able to set the overarching country of origin for your items for sale (menu items).
